Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA
9-Ball Classic
By Jeff Dotezal
On March 28 — 30 the Virginia Mid-Atlantic PVA 9-Ball Classic was
held at The Playing Field in Richmond, Virginia.
This event was the third official event
of the second season of the PVA/NWPA National Wheelchair Billiards
Tournament Series.
The field consisted of nineteen (19)
pool players who signed up to compete for the awards and prizes,
with the majority of the
players coming from the immediate
Richmond area. Eight players came from beyond 100 miles, with one
player traveling more
that 1,000 miles to attend the event and
another player coming down from Canada.
This event was the fourth NWPA sanctioned event to be held at The
Playing Field since 2004. The venue staff welcomed the NWPA
and its players back to Richmond with
good food and better than good service. There is no way that this
event would have been possible
without their hard work and support.
Thanks are in order for the staff of The Playing Field, its
General Manager, Larry Smith and its owner,
Tegan Stephen. This is a great place to
play billiards anytime one is in the Richmond area.
The Tournament Director for this event was Shawn Interrante. Shawn
has helped the NWPA with several past tournaments in a variety
of roles and this time she signed on as
Tournament Director. Shawn handled the event well and I look
forward to seeing her run more
tournaments for the NWPA in the future.
Michelle Shaw-Richey and Rashunda Gregory, from Virginia Mid-
Atlantic PVA, fulfilled the
duties as Tournament Coordinators for the
event. Thank you Michelle and Rashunda for all of your hard work
leading up to and during
the event.
In the tournament’s Main Event, Don Owen, from Ontario, Canada,
went undefeated to claim the ‘hot seat’. While Owen waited
comfortably
in front of several big screen TVs, there
was a baffle going on over on the one- loss side of the brackets,
to see who would meet him in the
championship match. Mike Chenail ended
Lee Sexton’s rookie tournament with a 7 games to 4 win. Bill
Frisby managed to overcome a five
game to two deficit, to defeat Jeff
Dolezal in a hill-hill match, winning 7 games to 6. Sexton and
Dolezal finished tied for 5 place. Frisby went
on to defeat Mike Chenail, 7 games to 5,
leaving Chenail to finish in 4 place. Frisby finished in 3 place,
when he was unable to get past
Ken Noffle. Nottle won their match, 7
games to 4.Following this match, Nottle went on to claim his first
PVA/NWPA Tournament Series
title, by defeating Don Owen in a hard
fought two-set championship match, winning the first set, 7 games
to 5 and the second set, 7 games to 0.
Owen finished in 2 place.
In the Second Flight Event, David Richardson, a student attending
Radford University in Virginia, defeated Jimmy May in another
tough
two-set final match. May, who had to
defeat Richardson twice to claim the title, due to an earlier
round loss, won the first set, 5 games
to 4. Richardson prevailed in the second
set, winning by a score of 5 games to 3. Richardson’s first place
finish in this event was particularly
special, since he was playing in his
first competitive wheelchair pool tournament. May and Chuck Willis
took home 2 and 3 place, respectively.
The success of the PVAINWPA National Wheelchair Billiards
Tournament Series is dependent upon the support of its sponsors
and those
of the PVA and NWPA. The NWPA is proud
to recognize Viking Cue Manufacturing, Inc., Sports Fan Products,
LLC and the
Billiard Congress of America.

NWPA TIP OF THE MONTH
With summer right around the corner and when
traveling to warm weather destinations, such as
Arizona and Nevada, store your cues in a cool, dry
environment in order to
prevent them from warping.
